You finally did it. You finally bought the house you’ve been dreaming of, or maybe you refinanced for a better rate. Then, something unexpected happens. You begin receiving letters and postcards claiming to be from your mortgage company or someone trying to help you with your mortgage account. They typically contain intimidating language pushing for urgency such as “Time sensitive” or “You have until this date to call us.” This can be a scary thing to receive in the mail and cause uncertainty.

The good news is you don’t have to be afraid! Here’s what you should know about these “mortgage notices.”

Why Did I Receive This Notice?

First, you should know this notice did not come from ORNL FCU. Unfortunately, new mortgages and mortgage refinances are accessible through public records. Scammers, solicitors, and insurance companies can see when new mortgages are opened, and who they are serviced through. They use this information to try and sell policies or commit fraud. This usually happens through letters or postcards mailed directly to you. One key sign to look for is any disclosures in small print. These usually contain language explaining this sender is not affiliated with ORNL FCU. (Note the messaging in the lower right corner)

What Should I Do Now?

If you receive one of these postcards or letters in the mail, you can simply destroy it. Remember, if you ever receive any mail, email, phone call, or other correspondence claiming to be from ORNL FCU and you’re unsure, please contact us directly. Your safety is our top priority, and we would rather you check twice, three times, or even 100 times than let your personal information fall into the wrong hands.

As always, if you have any questions about mortgages, scams, or other financial matters, just reach out. We are more than happy to help!
