FRAUD ALERT - FAKE CHECKS

November 21, 2023

DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO CHECK FRAUD
Fraudsters are currently sending out fake cashier's checks accompanied by instructional letters like the ones pictured below. The scam involves purchasing gift cards with the deposited funds with promise of additional funds.

DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE SCAM
Often, scammers send a check for more than expected. The letter instructs you to deposit the check and to send them the difference on a gift card. It is very important that you do no respond to the letter. It's a scam. The check is fake and you'll be out all that money.

REMEMBER

If you are ever suspicious of any letter, text, email, or other communication referencing ORNL FCU or your accounts, you can call the Credit Union at 800.676.5328 to verify.

Fraudsters seem to be especially creative and aggressive during the holiday season. Please be aware and stay safe out there.
